Job Title:  Chief Development Officer (CDO)
Job Location:  New York or Los Angeles
Classification:  Full-time, Exempt

Position Summary

This is an especially exciting time for The Trevor Project as we work to achieve our three-year plan to dramatically increase our impact across the nation. We are seeking a passionate and results-oriented Chief Development Officer (CDO) to be an integral member of the senior leadership team and help shape the strategic plan to maximize the organization’s effectiveness.

The Chief Development Officer will be responsible for the design and execution of a comprehensive and diverse fundraising plan including major gifts, planned giving, individual giving, special events, corporate and foundation giving, direct mail, and e-philanthropy.  The CDO reports to the Executive Director/CEO and plays a critical role in identifying, cultivating and soliciting major donors. The CDO will work in close collaboration with the Board of Directors, CEO and other executive staff to achieve the fundraising goals of the organization, currently targeted at $2.1 million.

Responsibilities:

  • The Chief Development Officer’s overall responsibility is to build a diverse, sustainable funding base for the organization that will support our ambitious performance and growth goals over time.
  • Participates in establishing fund development policies, procedures, plans, goals, and budgets
  • Aggressively seeks new funding sources and maintains relationships with current and past donors.
  • Take primary responsibility for executing The Trevor Project’s major gifts strategy, including donor identification, cultivation and stewardship.
  • Assumes primary responsibility for the development department and manages staff of three (Institutional Giving Director, Special Events Director and Database Manager).
  • Establish, manage and regularly report on fundraising goals and timelines.
  • Provide leadership and direction to the organization to engage others, as appropriate, in fund development.
  • Work closely with the board of directors to support their give/get fundraising efforts
  • Represent The Trevor Project in meetings and presentations to current and prospective donors.
  • Manage systems and processes for prospect research, donor cultivation and information tracking.
  • Participate in communications planning and decisions.

Qualifications:       

  • Master’s degree highly preferred; bachelor’s degree required.
  • CFRE affiliation a plus.
  • Minimum of five years of progressive experience in development, including a proven track record of identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major gift relationships.
  • Proven ability to train, manage, and motivate staff and volunteers
  • Demonstrates strong leadership skills
  • High level of professionalism with good comprehension skills
  • Friendly and outgoing personality, enthusiasm and dedication to teamwork
  • Excellent speaking and writing skills are essential.
  • Be able to manage multiple tasks and projects effectively
  • Knowledge and understanding of management principles, practices, methods and techniques
  • Experience analyzing data and conveying trends
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge or equivalent donor software
  • Knowledge and understanding of issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth
  • Demonstrates awareness and has credibility working within the LGBTQ community
  • Demonstrated experience working in a multicultural environment where commitment to diversity based on race, ethnic origin, gender, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, and physical ability is an important institutional value
  • Ability to travel and work evenings and weekends as required.

Supervisor:

  • The Chief Develepment Officer will report to the Executive Director/CEO.

Compensation:
Salary commensurate with experience.  Bonus plan and comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, long-term disability and vision insurance; annual leave, and 403(b) retirement plan participation.
